Beijing
Self-portrait in a mirror.
As you may have seen on TV in your respective countries, China celebrated it’s National Day and the 60 year anniversary of the PRC on October 1st. On that day, I got on a bullet train to come up to Beijing to conduct an interview and take board member portraits at a meeting. This bullet train was swanky, super fast, and unique to my train experiences in China…
For one, I’ve never been on a train that fast that I can remember. 300+ km/hr! It only takes a very quick 30 mins to make a trip that took me three hours in a bus on trafficky roads when I came in. But more unique than that was the singing…
Just as we all got settled on the train, the stewardesses got everyone’s attention and announced that we would get to sing along with the national anthem in honor of the National Day. We all stood at their prompting, music crackled in over the speaker, and everyone listened. But that apparently that wasn’t good enough. So they stopped the tape and explained again that everyone was supposed to sing the anthem. The music restarted and, at 300 km/hr, we sang. Have a listen to the sound bite I recorded with my pocket recorder…
After that, they passed out commemorative pens and about 20 mins later we arrived in Beijing.
